Hertfordshire Group

About our Group

We are a friendly group interested in a wide range of plants, seeing them in their habitat and growing them under cover and in the open garden.    We have members growing plants in alpine houses, in frames, in raised beds and in troughs.   Most of us grow non alpines too.   You do not need any expertise to become a member, you just need a love of plants.   From time to time we organize informal visits to members gardens through the group, but most people are only too pleased to show you their prize plants if you ask to see them.   More information about the group e-mail the Secretary Bernard Gane secretary@hertsags.co.uk or phone01582 761416.

We have a series of monthly lectures from the end of September until June.   Lecturers are specialist nurserymen, plant hunters and travellers with a camera from the AGS's list of experts.

Meetings are held on the 4th Saturday of the month at the Homewood Road United Reformed Church Hall,  Homewood Road, St. Albans AL1 4BH.   http://www.homewoodurc.org/Homewood_Road_URC_v2/Home.html    Meetings start at 3.00 p.m.   There is a charge of £4.00 per meeting for visitors, but this entitles you to free refreshments.

We raffle plants brought in by the membership at every meeting.   At each meeting a nurseryman sells plants & in addition members plants are sold at the AGM in September & at the Show in March.

Members grow plants from seed from distributions by the Alpine Garden Society and propagate their best plants to sell at our plant sales.

We have an Annual Competition and grand plant sale in March, see the schedule under Competition Rules.

Membership is open to all and you do not need to belong to the Alpine Garden Society itself to join our group.    (However if you are a paid up member of the Alpine Garden Society you will enjoy a quarterly magazine, 'The Alpine Gardener', and free entry to the regional and national shows.)

Visitors may come to our meetings on payment of a visitors fee, which is currently £3

Subscription is £5.50 and due in September.
